My Role?

Problem Statement

How can we provide affordable, effective, and eco-friendly skincare solutions to challenge overpriced and ineffective alternatives? Additionally, how can we effectively communicate that our products are safe and backed by scientific evidence for being clean?

Many consumers find it difficult to navigate the skincare market due to the prevalence of products that are not only overpriced but also fail to deliver effective results. Additionally, these products often lack transparency in their ingredients, with many not adhering to clean or environmentally friendly standards. This leaves consumers searching for trustworthy options that are both affordable and effective, while also prioritizing safety and sustainability.

Challenges & Lessons

One of the primary challenges I faced was deciding which specific skin issues to target, given the vast array of concerns people face, such as dryness, aging, sensitivity, and more. After some research, I discovered that acne is one of the most prevalent skin irritations, affecting a wide demographic. This insight guided my decision to focus on creating a product line that addresses acne while also considering other common concerns like inflammation and uneven skin tone. By concentrating on these issues, I aimed to provide effective solutions that cater to a broad audience, ensuring the hypothetical skincare line would be both relevant and valuable to consumers.

Research

As a designer tasked with developing a hypothetical skincare line, I embarked on a research process to understand the skincare industry and the components that constitute clean, safe products. This involved delving into scientific studies on various ingredients and identifying popular and effective formulations and ingredients. My goal was to ensure that each product in the line would meet standards of safety, efficacy, and environmental responsibility. By researching consumer preferences, I aimed to create a line that not only addresses acne concerns but also aligns with the growing demand for transparency and sustainability in the beauty industry.

Ideation

After mood boarding and conducting user interviews, I gathered insights into consumer preferences and perceptions. One key finding emerged from these discussions: participants consistently associated products that appear scientifically proven with a sleek, clean, and almost futuristic look. They felt that such aesthetics conveyed a sense of credibility and trustworthiness, suggesting that the products were backed by research and innovation. With this feedback, the aim was to reflect Miracule's commitment to advanced, science-based formulations while also appealing to a modern, discerning audience.

With this in mind, I chose to base my designs on abstract representations of skin cell molecules. Guided by user feedback, we opted for a color palette featuring cool-toned blues and purples, complemented by white and potential gradient elements. These colors were selected to convey a futuristic aesthetic, as users commonly associate these hues with innovation and scientific credibility.

Design System

The name "Miracule" is a play on the words "miracle" and "molecules," reflecting our belief that the remarkable ingredients in our products can work wonders on your skin.

Based on user feedback, we chose a color palette of cool-toned blues and purples, accented with white and possible gradients. These colors were selected to evoke a futuristic feel, as they are often associated with innovation and scientific credibility.

Logo

Each icon within the molecule cluster represents a “good” cell, and our logo reflects this simple yet meaningful design. In our design system, these icons symbolize the five steps in the Miracule skincare routine, with each icon corresponding to a distinct product in our line.

Refinement

Our initial designs were overly playful and illustrative. We sought a more refined and professional approach, focusing on simplicity and elegance to better align with our brand's identity.

What’s Next

Miracule is a conceptual skincare line I developed for a senior class project, and it currently does not exist in the real world. While I am enthusiastic about potentially continuing this project and creating real-life mockups in the future, for now, it remains a theoretical concept. Stay tuned!
